Raymond Wright
a.k.a
KONSTANT
Born in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Konstant spent his first five years with his parents then was sent to live with his paternal grandmother in the parish of St. James. It was there while attending Garland All Age School that some inkling of what the youngster would become emerged. He performed a Yellow Man song at a concert and was so enraptured by the response from the audience that he decided then and there he’d found his calling.
At the age of 12, he returned to live with his Father in Spanish Town, where his infatuation with music continued as his musically inclined
father would play guitar while Raymond and his brother would sing and dj to whatever rythms the senior Wright plucked on the strings. It was during these spontaneous and carefree moments he would “picture” himself “on a huge stage”.
Inspired by the likes of Yellow Man, Birgadier Jerry and Pappa San, Raymond would give impromptu street corner performances of their lyrics, the people of his Tawes pen community gathering round to hear him sing.
Raymond got his first taste of musical success in 1991 when he emerged victorious from a pool of 29 other hopefuls in a DJ Contest staged at Coney Park. This led to an offer of a performance slot on Teen Splash, a popular event staged at the aforementioned venue as well as a spot on Hot Shots. In that same year he released his first single “Sharon Gal”, recording under the stage name Silver Turtle, in collaboration with his brother Renel Wright aka Ninja Turtle. The duo was collectively billed as Turtles Two and the song was produced by Black Beard at Sonic Sounds.
In 1992 Silver Turtle represented the parish of St. Catherine in the Festival pop and Variety Song Contest and progressed all the way to the semi-final round. From there he got the opportunity to record with a slew of local labels including Mixing Lab, Cash Flow, Kingswell Records, King Jammy’s, Nuisance Entertainment, Goldstream Records and Bookie Productions. He enjoyed a minor buzz as he was featured in the Weekend star, The Gleaner, X-news and performed live on the CVM Party Time TV show. He also got billed for numerous stage shows in and around Spanish Town and Kingston.
In 2007, the DJ got the opportunity to travel to the United States. He spent a great deal of time in California where he linked up with Permanent Groove Music and RNB Entertainment Group. These links turned out to be very lucrative as he had the opportunity to record collaboration with the legendary Evelyn “Champagne” King as well as Irish sensation Kelly Blaise and the soulful N’Kenge. He also recorded a song for the soundtrack to the popular FOX Channel reality show COPS and performed on shows in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami. On this overseas sojourn the artiste adopted the new stage name “Konstant” to reflect the commitment he had to the music, the steadfast mind state that kept him on his chosen path, despite the difficulties.
Konstant returned to Jamaica in 2008 and now applies all the lessons and experiences from his overseas trod to the task of breaking big on the local scene. He now Sign with Cashfow Records, two of his most current recordings are being heavily rotated on Irie FM, Bess FM and Hot 102.
